Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
You are not your thoughts. We can help you reclaim your time and peace of mind.
What Is OCD?
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, commonly known as OCD, is a mental health condition characterized by recurring, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or rituals (compulsions). These thoughts and behaviors can cause significant distress, interfere with daily life, and make it difficult to focus, relax, or feel in control.
People with OCD often recognize that their thoughts are irrational but find it extremely hard to stop them. Compulsions may provide temporary relief but often reinforce the anxiety cycle over time.
Common Symptoms of OCD
According to the Mayo Clinic and clinical guidelines, common signs and symptoms of OCD include:
- Intrusive or distressing thoughts
- Compulsive counting or checking
- Repeated cleaning of the same object or space
- Constantly checking locks, stoves, or appliances
- Excessive fear of germs or contamination
- Hoarding or difficulty discarding items
- Worry that you might be harmed or cause harm to others
These symptoms can vary widely in severity and type, and they may change over time. OCD can affect anyone, regardless of age or background.
Effective Treatment for OCD
If any of the symptoms above feel familiar, therapy can help. Some of the common treatments for OCD include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), particularly a subtype known as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and psychodynamic psychotherapy.
Working with a trained mental health professional can make a significant difference in learning how to manage symptoms and reduce their impact on your life.
